What is a kundli?

A kundli (janam kundli or janam patri) is the Vedic birth chart: the positions of the nine grahas (Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn, Rahu and Ketu) in the twelve rashis at the moment of birth, counted from the lagna, the sign rising in the east.

Rashi, Navamsa and Dashamsa

The Rashi chart (D1) is the main chart. Divisional charts split each sign into parts to look closer at one area of life: the Navamsa (D9) divides each sign into nine parts of 3°20′ and is read for marriage, partners and the inner strength of each planet; the Dashamsa (D10) divides each sign into ten parts of 3° and is read for career and public life.

Nakshatras and dashas

The zodiac is also divided into 27 nakshatras of 13°20′, each with four padas. The Moon's nakshatra is your birth star, and it starts the Vimshottari dasha: a 120-year cycle of planetary periods (mahadashas), each split into sub-periods (antardashas). The tables show every graha's nakshatra, its pada and lord, and how far it has travelled through it.

Which ayanamsa should I use?

The ayanamsa is the gap between the tropical and sidereal zodiacs, about 24° today. Lahiri (Chitrapaksha) is India's official ayanamsa and the most widely used, so it's the default. KP astrologers use Krishnamurti, and followers of B.V. Raman his own. You can pick any of them, a star-based one like True Chitra, or enter your own value in Settings. See every ayanamsa.
