What is a birth chart?

A birth chart, or natal chart, is a map of the sky at the moment you were born, seen from the place you were born. It shows which zodiac sign the Sun, the Moon and each planet were in, and how they sat in the twelve houses, the parts of the sky that astrology links with different areas of life.

What you need

  • Your date of birth.
  • Your time of birth, as exact as you can find it: birth certificates often have it. The rising sign moves about one degree every four minutes.
  • Your place of birth. The time zone and any daylight saving in force that day are worked out for you, and you can change them.

Western and Vedic charts

Western astrology uses the tropical zodiac, tied to the seasons. Vedic astrology (Jyotish) uses the sidereal zodiac, tied to the stars, which today sits about 24° behind. That's why your Vedic signs are often one sign earlier. Astro shows both: the Western wheel with Placidus or other houses, and the Vedic Rashi, Navamsa and Dashamsa charts with nakshatras and the Vimshottari dasha. See the free kundli page for more.

How accurate is it?

Positions are calculated from the same scientific theories observatories use, and match NASA's JPL ephemeris to within a few arcseconds for any date from 1900 to 2100. Read how it works.
